The brief was to refurbish a dilapidated, run down 2-storey 5-bedroom Villa from the 1850s which had been vacant for 6 years. It involved a complete overhaul of the existing fabric of the building, preserving the historic character along the street frontage of a Conservation Area.

The interventions were focused predominantly on the rear elevation by creating a new contemporary double-storey zinc/brick clad extension, not only emphasising subtly an “old/new” transition, but also with its generous glass openings allowing the garden and natural light become part of the interior spaces.

Internally the aim was to rationalize and refurbish the existing fragmented layout to create continuous spaces, satisfying the requirements of a modern family home.

A  new living dining and kitchen area as “communal meeting hub” of the home has been added around a double height lid-flood void. The existing central staircase has been revamped with a contemporary glass balustrade ensuring the maximum amount of light filters through the centre of the house, allowing daylight into each corner of the building.
